Haugland Group

Project Submission: Transmission for New York’s First Offshore Wind Project

Haugland Group is an energy and civil infrastructure company working to help New York establish leadership in the renewable energy industry. Haugland’s full suite of infrastructure services supports offshore wind initiatives; from land and marine cable installation and substation construction to trucking and inland marine logistics.

South Fork Wind: New York’s First Offshore Wind Project
As part of New York’s first offshore wind project, Haugland Group was contracted to install an electrical duct bank and new substation and interconnection of transmission lines, powering over 70,000 homes with clean, offshore wind energy. Located in the Town of East Hampton, NewYork, the project began with installation of the Transition Joint Bay (TJB) along Beach Lane, connecting the new 138 kV circuit to the existing East Hampton Substation.

Innovations
Given offshore wind is an emerging industry, the Haugland Group incorporated several project innovations throughout construction. Notably, the duct bank required two separate lifts of thermal concrete to protect the circuit after construction. Haugland Group utilized a metal stay-in-place form to eliminate the need to strip plywood or some other forming system from the trench. The stay-in-place form increased the safety, efficiency, and production of the duct bank installation, enabling Haugland Group to meet this demanding schedule.

Complexities & Considerations
Project complexities and considerations included wildlife preservation/nesting of the North American Long Eared Bat and Eastern Box Turtle, cutting the site to grade including the remediation of contaminated fill, installation of concrete foundations, noise wall installation, site drainage, grounding, miscellaneous equipment installation and support, various yard fill, and precast trench installation.

Located in a sensitive neighborhood, Haugland Group’s project management team and workforce balanced an aggressive schedule while accommodating stringent community requirements. No work could be performed on roadways between May 1 – October 1. As a mitigation method during this summer restriction, Haugland Group redirected resources to work along the LIRR ROW. Access issues, work area restrictions, protecting the integrity of the active LIRR track and a restrictive Limit of Disturbance (LOD) all presented challenges along the railroad.

This project presented many significant challenges progressing work with strict delivery schedules. Haugland Group was tasked with installing foundations and various substation infrastructure while maintaining access and setting of large equipment (such as the station transformer, shunt reactor and control house).

Offshore Wind Consultants

Project Submission: OWC Offshore Wind Internship Program

Jeff FodiakThe offshore wind market is growing rapidly to meet the increased global demand for future sustainable energy. The significant energy transition is underway, and with it, the rise of offshore wind is changing the route of energy professions. The number of specialized experts, however, has not grown significantly. The Offshore Wind Consultants (OWC) team, under the leadership of Jeff Fodiak, has demonstrated a significant contribution to the offshore wind profession, including attracting and growing a diverse pipeline of young talent.

This year Jeff took the initiative to participate in the New York State Clean Energy Internship Program. Under this program, the OWC office in New York is helping to prepare the next generation of clean energy workers by finding internships for students through the New York State Clean Energy Internship Program. As a result of this program, the OWC office in New York utilized seven interns this year. During their internship, the OWC team offered interns hands-on experience with projects covering the entire life cycle of offshore wind development: planning and analysis, site assessment, construction and operations, and operation and maintenance.

In 2022 Jeff participated in various internal training and development initiatives, including Engineering Development Scheme, Shadow Board, and Leadership Live. Jeff’s team is also developing additional initiatives, including a mentorship scheme, dedicated learning and development plans, and ABL Academy.
