Spain: Front Runner of Floating Wind Development in Europe

This workshop will give an overview of the status of the Spanish floating wind sector both from a market and industrial point of view.

With a goal of 3GW by 2030, Spain is one of the European leaders of floating wind development. The first commercial tender is expected to take place in the first semester of 2024, most likely for the Canary Islands. The workshop will include key information about the status of the Spanish market.

Additionally, Spain has positioned itself as a leader in floating wind energy technologies research. Home to seven foundation developers (out of ~40 worldwide) and several strategic R&D initiatives that cover different key areas for floating wind successful deployment (such as specialized O&M, industrialization, and floating substations), Spain is leading the charge on floating offshore win development.

Belgium: The Art & Science of Weather Modeling and Data Collection

Drawing upon lessons learned from Belgian offshore wind farms, panelists will demonstrate how novel data collection techniques and accurate weather models lead to improved energy yield predictions and optimized wind park configurations. Attendees will learn about a method for the rapid gathering of performance data of offshore foundation joints, which saves weight and cost. Panelists will also share new possibilities for preventative maintenance and an optimized planning tool for maintenance operations based on accurate weather modeling and a better understanding of wind turbine blade erosion.

The presentation will give an overview of the status of the Norwegian offshore wind sector both from a market and industrial point of view. With a goal of 30 GW being awarded by 2040, mostly floating, Norway is one of the European leaders of offshore wind development. First auctions are schedule this year for 3 GW, (1.5 GW floating and 1.5 GW bottom-fixed) with next auctions expedited to be schedule for 2025. The presentation will include key information about the status of the Norwegian offshore wind market. Norway is the home of the world’s largest operating floating wind farm, the 95 MW Hywind Tampen.
