New Jersey establishes leadership position in the U.S. offshore wind energy industry
Governor Murphy pushed New Jersey to the forefront of the U.S. offshore wind energy industry by announcing today that in addition to the 1100 MW application window for offshore wind projects that may open on September 17, he is calling on the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJ BPU) to open two additional 1200 MW solicitations in 2020 and 2022.
This total of 3500 MW of offshore wind solicitations is the largest in the nation, surpassing the 3200 MW for Massachusetts and 2400 MW for New York State. Governor Murphy said that the NJ BPU will determine the process by which the additional windows will be opened in 2020 and 2022.
“This is a significant step forward for the offshore wind industry in New Jersey and the U.S. market as a whole,” said Liz Burdock, President/CEO, Business Network for Offshore Wind. “The 3500 MW solicitation will attract bids from all of the major offshore wind developers and make a New Jersey a center of activity for the next four years and beyond.”
